William Mabbett was born in 1892 in Potters Bar to Rose Ellen Mabbett (born 1876) and unrecorded father. No record of a birth was found.
On the 1891 Census Rose Ellen was living with her parents Charles Mabbett, labourer, and his wife Ellen with their other children William (born 1881), Frederick (born 1883) at Capel Cottages, Southgate Road, South Mimms.
On the 1901 Census William’s mother, Rose Ellen was living with Partner Arthur Waldren, gas fitter, with their children Maude (born 1898) and Mafeking (born 1901) at 44 Strafford Road, South Mimms. No record was found for William.
On the 1911 Census there was an Albert William (born 1895) was living with his grandparents Charles and Ellen Mabbett at Chase Farm, South Mimms.
Wartime Service
No Service Record was found for William, he enlisted in London as Private 21176 in the Highland light Infantry probably in late 1914 or early 1915.
Following his training he went to France on 2 Oct 1915 to join 2nd Battalion HLI, which had been in the field since Aug 1914. In 1915 the 2nd Division were in the Loos Sector and were later moved to the Somme taking part in the Battle of Delville Wood (15 Jul – 3 Sep 1916) and the Battle of the Ancre on 13 Nov 1916 where 2nd Battalion HLI attacked after lying in front of their own trench and keeping close to their own barrage were soon in the enemy front line, they were unable to complete their objectives due to depletion of the Ranks. William was reported Missing believed killed. His remains were not recovered and his death assumed to have been 14 Nov 1916. He is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme.
