Pre War
Joseph Albert Ludlow was born in 1888 in Berkhamsted, Herts, the son and youngest child of Thomas and Eliza (Elizabeth) Ludlow and one of eight children. He was baptised on 5 September 1888 in Great Berkhamsted.
His mother died in 1889 and on the 1891 Census the family were living at Cross Oak Road, Berkhamsted where his widowed father was working as a wheelwright. They remained there in 1901 but by 1911 Joseph was a boarder with widow Elizabeth Welch and her daughter Lily at 23 Highfield Road, Berkhamsted and working as a chemical labourer (at Coopers).
He married Maud Louise Pansey in 1912 in Berkhamsted and they had five children, although one died in infancy. They lived at 7 New Street, Berkhamsted. (When Maud died in 1925, Mrs Pearce became guardian of the children.)
Wartime Service
Joseph had initially served with the Hertfordshire Regiment, under reg. no. 157801, later transferring to the Royal Defence Corps, 164th Protection Company and serving in the UK.
He died from influenza and broncho-pneumonia on 11 November 1918 at the Catterick Hospital, Yorkshire, aged 30, and is buried in St Peter's Church Cemetery, Great Berkhamsted.
Additional Information
His widow received a war gratuity of £9 and pay owing of £9 14s 10d. She also received a pension of £1 13s 9d a week for herself and her four children.
