We believe this to be the A. Luckey on the Cheshunt Town Memorial
Arthur Luckey was born in Birchanger, Essex, on 12th April 1885, son of William Luckey a, Woodman and Lydia Luckey (nee Bartrop). One of six children.
He was Baptised at St. Mary’s Church, Birchanger, Essex, on 1st November 1885.
1891 Census records Arthur aged 5, living with his Uncle and aunt, Thomas and Ann Judd in, The Street, Takeley, Essex. His parents and five siblings were living in, Cambridge Road, Birchanger, Essex.
1901 Census no record for Arthur was found, his parents and four siblings were still living in Cambridge Road, Birchanger.
1911 Census, Arthur (25) is single, employed as a Nursery Garden Hand and a Boarder at, 11 Turnford Cottages, Turnford, Herts. His parents, brother Thomas (24) are now living Nr. Sion House, Stansted, Essex.
Wartime Service
Arthur enlisted at Cheshunt, posted to the Bedfordshire Regiment with the service number 16061. On completion of his training, he arrived in France on 30th August 1915, seeing action on the Western Front.
He was Killed in Action on 13th February 1916, aged 30, at the time of his death he was serving with “A” Company, 8th Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment, he is buried in the CWGC La Brique Military Cemetery No. 2. in Belgium.
Additional Information
His effects of £5-16-6, pay owing and his war gratuity of £6, went to his father William.
The SDITGW record his death as 14th February 1916.
His elder brother 17183 Private Ernest Luckey of the Coldstream Guards was Killed in Action on 21st August 1918, in France. A local newspaper reported that he was shot by a sniper.
Younger brother 3511 Gunner Harry Luckey of the 5th Division, Australian Field Artillery, died of illness at Guys Hospital, London, on 5th January 1918.
