Biography
The following text was transcribed from The Edmundian (1814-1819) – The contemporary magazine of St Edmund’s College:
The Count de to Pasture, the father of Captain de la Pasture, lived in our neighbourhood some thirty years ago, when he had a tenancy of the historic mansion of Rowney Abbey - as it was then called - which was at one time the home of the well-known composer Michael Balfe, who in fact died there in 1870. After that, the house was taken by the well-known Catholic family, the Sibeths; and then by the Count de la Pasture, so that it was in Catholic hands for many years. It was perhaps natural that, living so close to the College, the Count should send his son while young to be educated here; and he spent two years at St. Hugh's Preparatory School, viz: from 1890 to 1892. After this his family left our neighbourhood, and Charles de la-Pasture was sent to Downside, where he stayed through the remainder of his course. In 1900 he joined the army, and saw active service during the concluding stages of the South African War. During the present war he won distinction and was mentioned in the despatches(sic) of Sir John French dated 14th January. He has been missing since October 29th, as was noted in our Christmas number ; and it is now known that he was killed on that day.
