Pre War

Godfrey Beaumont Loyd was born on 10 March 1893 in Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire, the eldest son of William and Diana Loyd, and one of five children.  He was baptised there on 1 May 1893.

On the 1901 Census Godfrey was a pupil with siblings Diana, Vivian and Wilfred at a school run by Governess in Charge, 22 year old Grace Goodchild at Manor House, Paley Street, White Waltham, Berkshire.

In 1911 Godfrey was living with his family, including sister Diana and brother Edward at Highwoods, Burghfield Common, Berkshire. His father's profession was described as banker and they had five servants. 18 year old Godfrey was then working as a bank clerk.

The family later lived at Ovington House, Ovington Gardens, Middlesex and Stonehill, Bagshot, Surrey.

Wartime Service

He joined the 12th Battalion of the Kings Royal Rifles Corps as 2nd Lt, and served in France from 11 July 1915, later rising to the rank of Captain.

Godfrey died of wounds, aged 24, on 1 December 1917 near La Vacquerie during the Battle of Cambrai, and received the Military Cross for exemplary gallantry in the field (circumstances unknown). He is buried in Tincourt New British Cemetery, France.

Additional Information

His father obtained probate of his estate in London on 17 April 1918 with effects of £547 15s 8d. He also received pay owing of £189 14s.
