George Albert Lowin was born in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire, in 1895, son of Charles Lowin a, Bricklayer and Mary Ann Lowin (nee Pomfret). One of five children.
1901 Census records George aged 5, living with his parents, elder brother James (8) at, 5 Cottage Gardens (North), High Street, Cheshunt, Herts. His uncle George Pomfret (21) was living with the family.
1911 Census, George his parents, brothers James (18), Frederick (11), Herbert (1) and sister Mable (5) are still living at 5 Cottage Gardens.
George married Maud Ellen Collins in 1915, they went on to have a son Alexander George Leslie Lowin, born in 1916.
Wartime Service
George enlisted at Cheshunt, Herts, posted to the 13th (West Ham Boys) Battalion, Essex Regiment, with the service number 29240.
On completion of his training, he was sent to France. He died on 2nd June 1917, of wounds received in action. He is buried in the CWGC Etaples Military Cemetery in France.
Additional Information
Maud received a widow’s pension of 18/9 a week from 3rd December 1917, and his effects of £3-17-5, pay owing and his war gratuity of £3.
His Headstone inscription “HOW OFT MY THROUGHS DO WANDER TO THAT GRAVESIDE DAY BY DAY” was requested by his widow Maud, of 5 Town Mead Road, Waltham Abbey, Essex.
