Pre War

Archibald George Loosley was born in Berkhamsted in 1899, the son of Alfred and Sarah Loosely. He was one of two children and had a younger brother named Albert. 


On the 1901 Census the family were living at 14 Highfield Road, Berkhamsted, where his father was working as a grocer's carman. They had moved to Tunbridge Wells, Kent by 1911 at which time they were living at 8 Avon Street, his father's occupation was listed as milk carrier and Archibald was a scholar. 

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Maidstone, Kent in 1917 and joined the the Queen's (Royal West Surrey Regiment), 7th Battalion. 


He was killed in action on 2 September 1918, aged 18.  He has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Vis-en-Artois Memorial, France. 

Additional Information

His mother received a war gratuity of £3 and pay owing of £3 11s 4d. She also received a pension of five shillings a week.
