Frederick John LONG was born in South Mimms, Hertfordshire, on 28th September 1897, son of Frederick John Long a Builders Carman and Jane Long (nee Osborne). The eldest of their seven children although two died in infancy.
Frederick Jr. was Baptised on 7th November 1897, at St Giles Church, South Mimms, Herts.
1901 Census records Frederick Jr. aged 3, living with his parents, and sister Agnes (1) in South Mimms Village, Herts. His Grandmother widow Mary Long is living with the family.
Frederick Jr. attended St Giles Church of England School, South Mimms.
1911 Census, Frederick Jr. (13) is at school, living with his parents, sisters Dorothy (9), Amy (4) and brother George (2), in South Mimms Village, Herts. His father Frederick John Long died later that year and brother William was born at the end of the year.
Wartime Service
Frederick Jr. enlisted on 3rd July 1915, for the duration of the war. He joined the Middlesex Regiment at Mill Hill, London, on 4th July 1915, and issued the service number 13377, serving with the 6th Battalion and later the 11th Battalion. On completion of his training, he went to France on 8th December 1915.
He was transferred to the Northumberland Fusiliers in March 1918, with the service number 64295.
On the 5th August 1918, he was transferred to the 2nd/4th Battalion York & Lancaster Regiment with the service number 57611.
He was wounded in action and taken to No. 19 Casualty Clearing Station at Frevent, France, were he died of his wounds on 27th August 1918, aged 21, he is buried in St. Hilaire Cemetery Extension, Frevent, France. Grave ref: N. 26.
Additional Information
His effects of £9-14s-05d, pay owing and his war gratuity of £14, went to his mother Jane Long, his mother also received a Dependents Pension of 9/- a week from 11th March 1919.
Frederick Jr. was awarded two Certificate for Gallant Conduct, and the Meritorious Service Medal (MSM).
