Pre War

Richard Cuthbert was born in Headington, Oxford on 14 April 1894 to Richard Lodge, College Lecturer at St Margaret Hall, and Annie Gwendoline (nee Morgan).


On the 1901 Census living at 25, Hope Street, Edinburgh,


His father was a Professor of History at Edinburgh University and was knighted in 1917. His parents at one time lived at Lane End, Harpenden.

Wartime Service

Richard enlisted as private 1887 in 4th Battalion Royal Scots (Lothian Regiment) and was commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant on 15 Dec 1914 in 16th (Service) Battalion and served in "C" Company.


The Battalion went to France in 1916 and took part in Battle of the Somme and in 1917 the Battle of Arras. Richard was an Acting Captain when he was killed in action on 27 Aug 1917.


His remains were not recovered and he is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial
