Pre War

George Day was born on 10 February 1891 in Welwyn, Herts, the son of Thomas and Emma Day and one of eleven children. He was baptised at St Mary's, Welwyn on 7 June 1891. On the 1901 Census the family were living in White Hill, Welwyn where his father was a farm labourer.


They remained in Welwyn in 1911 and he was  living with his mother and brother James at Frythe Cottages, White Hill, Welwyn. George was working as a navvy in the brickmaking industry. His father was not listed with them. 


His mother later gave her address as 3 White Hill, Welwyn. 

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Whitehall, London and served with the Royal Fusiliers (London Regiment).


He was killed in action on 31 July 1917 during the Third Battle of Ypres, better known as Passchendaele. His death was presumed as his body was not recovered for burial or not identified, and his name is commemorated on the Menin Gate in Ypres.

His mother Emma received a war gratuity of £5 14s 9d and pay owing of £1 15 3d.
