Charles George Day was born 26 June 1892 in Collins Cross, on the outskirts of Bishop's Stortford, to Charles George and Mary Eleanor Day and was their eldest son. He was baptised on 31 July 1892 at Hockerill, Hertford.
On the 1911 Census he was at home with his family at 47 South Street, Bishop's Stortford and his occupation was given as Soldier in British Army.
Wartime Service
Extract from De Ruvigny's Roll of Honour:
". . . enlisted in 1st Battn on 26 Nov 1906 and was transferred to the 3rd Battn in Oct 1907, serving with it in Egypt, 1907 to April 1911, and with the Expeditionary Force in France, Aug 1914 to Feb 1915. He was shot through the head by a sniper while building a dug-out close to the brickfields near la Bassee, 22 Feb 1915, and was buried at Cuinchy, unm. His NCO spoke highly of him."
