Pre War
Born in 1879, in Bengeo, to parents Stephen Robert and Mary Rebecca (nee Gaylor), he was one of eight and in 1891 and 1901 they were living in 10 Burford Street, Hoddesdon, his father was a stableman/groom whilst Edwin was a labourer working on the New River.
He married Kate Sewell in 1903 and in 1911 they were living at 2 Burford Place, Hoddesdon, with their two daughters Elsie aged 5 and Maud aged 3, he was still a labourer for the water board.
Enlisted in Hertford.
Wartime Service
Enlisted in Hertford in the 6th (service) battalion, after training in England they went to France on 26th July 1915 where their division concentrated near Flesselles.
In 1916 they were in action at the Somme, taking part in battles at Trones Wood, Delville Wood, Thiepval and Ancre Heights.
The following year they took part in the German retreat to the Hindenburg Line before moving to Flanders where they saw action at Pilkem Ridge, Langemarck and Passchendaele. 1918 saw them fighting at the Battle of the Avre, the last German attempt to capture Amiens, this was the last part of the German Spring Offensive, it took place on 4th and 5th April, when both British and Australian troops held of German attacks and carried out a surprise night time attack which recaptured lost ground, it was on that date the Edwin was killed in action.

Brother of Lance Corporal Robert Ernest Linge who was killed in action on 31 Jul 1917 and who is also commemorated on these memorials.
