Frank Lines ws born in Flqamstead, Markyate to william Lines, labourer, and Sarah Ann, a straw hat machinist, (nee Dunckley.


On the 1891 Census his parents anD Frank were living at London Road, Flamstead Markyate.


On the 1901 Census the family of parents, Frank, Annie Elizabeth (born 1893), and Harold (born 1897) were living at London Road, Markyate.


On the 1911 Census Frank was listed as a straw hat Blocker living at 15, London Road, Markyate with his parents, Annie (straw hat maker) and Harold (coal porter).

Wartime Service

No Service Record was found for Frank, who may have enlisted shortly after the outbreak of the Great War in the Bedfordshire Regiment as Private 14550. He went to France on 11 Oct 1915 probably joining 7th (Service) Battalion as part of 18th (Eastern) Division. In July 1916 the Division took part in the Battles of Albert (1– 13 Jul) and Bazentin Ridge (14 -17 Jul).

Extract from Battalion War Diary:- ‘Positions just outside Albert (Tara-Usna line) in reserve (7/7), Heligoland trenches in support (11/7), Tara-Usna line (13/7). Attack on Pozieres (15/7) - attack soon held up by machine gun fire and leading waves forced to retire. Casualties - over 244. To Albert (16/7), Bresle(19/7).’
Frank was killed in action in the attack on 15 Jul 1916, his remains were not recovered and he is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme. France.
