Pre War

Son of James William LIGHTFOOT of London, and the late Florence Maud (nee HAYES) LIGHTFOOT.

His parents married 18 October 1889 at St Saviour’s, Leeds, Yorks.  Florence died 1906 in the St Pancras, London, district aged 36, and was buried 27 April in St Pancras Cemetery, Camden, London; James died 1949 in the Kensington, London, district aged 79.

George was born February 1894 in Hackney, London.  He went to Canada 20 May 1913, a farm labourer aged 21, aboard the White Star line Teutonic from Liverpool to Montreal.

On the 1901 Census, aged 6 he lived in Hackney, with his parents and three siblings.  On the 1911 Census, he is proving elusive.

Wartime Service

He attested 21 September 1914 at Valcartier, Canada: a waiter aged 19, unmarried, 5’5″ tall; his next-of-kin was his father of London. 

He was originally reported missing, believed killed, now confirmed killed in action in an attack north of Courcelette.
