Pre War

Albert Edward Lewis was born in Clapton, Hackney, London, on 6th October 1890, son of Samson Lewis a, Labourer and Elizabeth Lewis (nee Reid). One of twelve children although six died in infancy.


He was Baptised at St. Jame’s the Great, Clapton, London, on 9th November 1890. At the time the family were living at 12 Lee Bridge Road, Clapton, London.


1891 Census records Albert aged 6 months, living with his parents, brothers Charles (5) and William (3) at, 12 Lee Bridge Road, Clapton.


1901 Census records Albert aged 9, at school, living with his parents, brothers Charles (15), William (13), sisters Florence (8) and Emmie (7) at, 35 Alexander Road, Cheshunt, Herts.


Albert enlisted in the Royal Navy on 23rd August 1909, for 12 years, aged 18, giving his occupation as a Nurseryman. He was issued with the service number K/4022.


1911 Census, Albert and brother William are recorded as sailor (possible home on leave) living with their parents and brother Frank (5) at, 185 Eleanor Cross Road, Waltham Cross, Herts. The family had four boarders, the Allen family and Solomon Warren.

Wartime Service

At the outbreak of war Albert was still serving with the Royal Navy, aboard H.M.T.B. “117”.


Albert was drowned at sea on 10th June 1917, aged 26, when H.M.T.B. “117” was in collision with the merchant ship SS “Kamourska” in the English Channel and sank, two other crew members also lost their lives. His body was not recovered, he is commemorated on the Chatham Naval Memorial, to the missing at sea.


He served aboard H.M.T.B. “117” from December 1912 to his death on 10th June 1917.

Additional Information

His mother received a dependents pension of 15/- a week from 25th July 1918, later reduced to 5/- a week from 6th November 1918. The pension record card has her address as, 24 Alexander Road, New Town, Waltham Cross, Herts.


His elder brother William Lewis also served in the Royal Navy. William was killed in action aboard HMS “Invincible” on 31st May 1916, during the Battle of Jutland.


Both brothers held the rank of “Stocker 1st Class”.
