Haileybury College Cloister Wall Memorial, Hertford Heath

Born on 28 Jul 1887 in Kensington, London son of Col. Hugh Arthur Lewes and Lucy Julia Perfect Lewes of "Rothsay", Camelsdale, Haslemere, Surrey. Educated at Haileybury College 1901-05. He was a civil engineer and was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant on 11 Apr 1911 in the Territorial Force.

Wartime Service

He suffered trench fever in Sep 1915 and rejoined his battalion in Nov 1915. He was involved in the ill-fated diversionary attack on Gommecourt on the first day of the Battle of the Somme. He and his unit managed to reach the 3rd line of German trenches where they were cut off and fought until they died. He was buried by the Germans, but his grave was subsequently lost.
