Arthur was born on 15 Jan 1886 in Harpenden to Arthur Lewin, railway porter, and Emma (nee Swain).


On the 1891 Census the family were living at Cold Harbour, Harpenden. By the 1901 Census they were living in Shillington and Arthur (Jr) was a farm labourer. Arthur married Mabel Holland in 1908. On the 1911 Census were living on High Street, Harpenden where Arthur was a tyre repairer at a tyre works. A later address for Arthur was Grove Road, Harpenden.

Wartime Service

Arthur volunteered in Nov 1914 as Private 19127 in the Bedfordshire Regiment and went to France on26 Jul 1915 with the 6th Battalion.


This Battalion took part in the Battle of the Somme, Arras and Battles of the Somme 1918 (German Spring Offensive) during which Arthur was killed in action on 3 April 1918.

Additional Information

War gratuity of £15 10s and arrears of £8 12s paid to his widow.
