Pre War

Born in Stockwell, Surrey on 31 December 1896 and baptised at St Andrew, Stockwell Green on 28 March 1897, George Lever was the son of George (Snr.) and Annie (nee Epps) Lever. His father is recorded as a carpenter.  His parents were married in 1880, recorded in the Lambeth registration district.

At the 1901 Census, George was four years old and living with his parents at 70 Hubert Grove, Brixton in Lambeth.  His father was aged 47 and still working as a carpenter and his mother was 42 years old. George had six siblings; Harry, Edith, Fred, Annie, Florence and Albert, and their ages were 20, 18, 14, 12, 10 and 8 respectively. The birthplaces are given as Fovant in Wiltshire for George (Snr.), Kensington, London for Annie, and Stockwell for all of the children. Also present is Sally Lever, a visitor.

At the 1911 Census, George is 14 years old and still living at 70 Hubert Grove with his parents and three of his siblings, Fred, Annie and Alfred. They are 23, 21 and 7 years old respectively. George and Annie had 10 children, four of whom had died in childhood. George (Snr.) is employed as a carpenter by the Chancery Lane Safe Deposit Company.  The birthplace for Annie (Snr.) is now given as Clapham, London.

Wartime Service

George Lever enlisted at Stockwell in Lambeth as Private G/11157, serving in the 11th Battalion of the Queen’s (Royal West Surrey) Regiment. He was killed in action, aged 19, on 17 September 1916 and is commemorated at the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing.

His parents moved to 151 Sparrows Herne, Bushey after his death.
