Herbert was the son of John Woodmass Lee and Charlotte Lee, of Sidmouth Villa, Worcester Rd, Great Malvern, Worcs., born 1890.


The 1891 Census, records Herbert, aged 6 months, as living at the Red Lion Inn, Gt. Malvern Worcester with his father (listed as the Inn keeper) mother Charlotte and siblings: Thomas H (12), John W (5) and Hannah E (2). Four servants were also recorded. By 1901 Herbert was at school and living at Worcester Rd Lodging House, with his family and  now including new siblings: where his father, although 65, was the lodging housekeeper. In 1911 John was still listed as the lodging housekeeper, but now at Sidmouth Villa, of his family only his wife was present. Herbert was now living with an Uncle at 61, Rainbow Hill, Worcester, and working as a fitter on the railway.


Officially recorded as born in Gt. Malvern, Worcester and enlisting in Piccadilly.

Wartime Service

He became Private 202509, 7th Battalion, Suffolk Regiment, but was formerly 6099, 64th Provisional Battalion, Weybourne, Norfolk


Details are vague, but he is believed to have died as prisoner of war at Tournai, Belgium


Awarded the   British War Medal, & Victory Medal.

Hatfield Parish Council Souvenir Committee Ledger: An “In Memoriam and Roll of Honour Album”; had been ordered for the relatives/friends of Herbert Lee; the address given was late Brocket 


The following is a letter from an A H Smith to the above committee - presumably a friend of Herbert's.

Dear Sir,

With reference to the souvenir, Pte. William Rhodes, 2nd Beds Regt. missing Aug 17th, Sanctuary Woods, Flanders.  He was living with Lord Mount Stephen nine years.


Pte Herbert Lee, 7th Suffolk Regt. died prisoner of war at Tournai, Belgium on March 19th 1918 with Lord Mt. Stephen about 16 months before enlistment.  If you consider their friends are entitled to souvenirs & forward cards to me and I will get them filled in.
