Wartime Service
On the 24th of August 1918 a small article in the Hertfordshire Express reports that "Private Chas. Lee of Graveley, is reported by the War Office as being wounded and missing since March 23 last. He belonged to the Hampshire Regiment, and then men did some gallant fighting against bog odds about that time. His wife, of High Street, Graveley, who has not has a letter from his since the battle of Cambrai, would be grateful for any information that any soldier could send her."
A week later, on the 31st of August, another article appeared which confirmed that "Mrs Lee has now heard through the International Red Cross Society at Geneva that the following report appears on lists dispatched from Berlin: "C. Lee No. 41410, Pioneer Battalion, Hants. Regiment, disc sent in through central effects bureau, 30/05/18. Death of the owner is not certain." The British Section of the Red Cross at Geneva states that: "In the absence of all details we can make no definite assertion as to his death."
The article closes with another request from his wife for any information about him from any soldier to be sent to her.
