Pre War

Born in Brent Pelham, son of George Lawrence and Mary Ann (nee Coxall). Birth registered Q2 1896 in Bishops Stortford.


In 1901, living with parents next door to the shop in Brent Pelham. In 1911, living at Black Hall and employed as a labourer at Black Hall Farm.

Wartime Service

Enlisted at Hertford as a private in the Hertfordshire Regiment. War memorial indicates that he was in the 1st battalion.

This battalion took part in the capture of the Schwaben Redoubt, near Thiepval, on 14th October 1916. The Hertford Mercury reported that shot by a sniper.  Charles William Lawrence died of wounds (SDITGW) three or four days later.
