Pre War

Without more information we are unable to identify anything about Joseph pre-war background and we do not know if he had any connection with Hitchin or Hertfordshire, other than his burial here.

Wartime Service

Joseph was formerly a Driver (66800 Spr) in the Royal Engineers. He was transferred to M/331657 Royal Army Service Corps on 20 November 1918.

Additional Information

It should be noted that there are two pension cards in his name. The first, date stamped, 24 September 1920. refers to his rank as Private correctly gives 331657 as one of his service numbers , but also gives MTE/8600 together with pencil annotation of 6800. The other bears no service number and refers to Foreman MMR Lavigne and refers to the seaman’s Institute and that he served H.M.S Glasgow and that he had not received a pension for over 3 years. Although the record has been annotated (recent years) as for Service Number M/331657, 66800, it seem likely that it is actually for a naval man of the same name.
