Pre War

William George was born in 1889 in Barnet to Alfred Langdale, an ironmonger’s porter, and Emma (Anthistle).

On the 1891 the family were living at Calvert Road, South Mimms. William had an older sister Lucy and a younger brother Alfred. On the 1901 His parents were living at 99 Sebright Road, Barnet and William now had two younger brothers John and Stanley and two younger sisters Marguerite and Victoria, a further sister would be born later (Winifred).

William married Ida Elizabeth Lee in 1910 and were living at 2 Oak Cottages Old Southgate. On the 1911 Census William was working as a butcher’s assistant. There would be two children, Leslie William Alfred born 1911 and Ida Rhoda Nellie born 1914.

Wartime Service

William enlisted at Hertford probably in Hertfordshire Regiment as Private 11216. No Service Record could be found so there is some confusion surrounding his service details. While his Soldiers Died in the Great War record states service with Herts Yeomanry as Private 2282 and Essex Regiment as Private 202759, this is at variance with his Medal Index Card which records his service numbers as Herts Regt 11216 and 270998, and Essex Regt 202759 (See Note below).  William was killed in action serving with 11 (Service) Battalion of the Essex Regiment during fighting in the Lens/Bethune area on 10/11 July 1917.

Note:- All Territorial Force Soldiers were allocated 6 figure numbers in early 1917, generally based on his original  enlistment Regiment and on transfer to a Regular Regiment would receive a new number from that Regiments number allocation, Hence 3 Service numbers but no clue as when a transfer took place.

Additional Information

War Gratuity of £9 10s and arrears of £3 16s 1d was paid to his widow. Brother Alfred served as private 2774 with Herts Yeomanry and survived the Great War. Brother John served as Private 2313 and 105631 in Herts Yeomanry in Egypt 1915 and also survived..
