Pre War

Wilfred Charles was born on 18 Nov 1891 in Watford to James Frederick Lang, commercial traveller, and Jane Sarah (nee Maries). The family were living at Langley Row, Watford.


On the 1911 Census Wilfred was boarding in Wembley and gave his occupation as assistant fitter. He emigrated to Manitoba Canada in Mar 1912.

Wartime Service

Wilfred enlisted on 15 Aug 1915 at Brandon, Manitoba for training with 79th Battalion also at Brandon. While under training he was promoted to Sergeant.


He sailed from Halifax, Nova Scotia on 24 April 1916 arriving in UK on 4 May 1916 and in the process of joining 17 Battalion CEF he reverted to Private. He went to France on 18 Aug 1916 joining 43 Battalion CEF. Wilfred was killed in action on 20 Sep 1916 as part of the Canadian forces during the Battle of Flers-Courcelette, Somme.


His remains were not recovered and he is remembered on Vimy Memorial, Vimy Ridge.
