Lionel William Lane was born in Armidale, New South Wales, the son of Herbert and K E Lane of Armidale.
He was educated at Armidale Public School and worked as a business manager.
Wartime Service
He had previously served in the Cadets and when he enlisted on 16 December 1915, he was given the rank of 2nd Lieutenant in the 53rd Battalion, 3rd Reinforcement.
His unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales, on HMAT A37 Barambah on 23 June 1916. He served on the Western Front and was killed in action on 21 November 1917, age 24.

Mr H M Lane, Armadale, New South Wales, Australia, ordered his headstone inscription: "BRITISH I LIVED BRITISH I DIED IN DEFENCE OF HUMANITY" Step-Brother: Major Cyril Herbert D Lane, 18th Bn, killed in action, 29 August 1915. N.B. Digswell Memorial gives his battalion as 62nd but no one with the surname of Lane could be found in that battalion.
