Pre War

Herbert Walter was born on 18 Oct 1880 in St Pancras, London to William Landeryou, a carpenter, and  (nee Wheatley). On the 1881 Census Herbert, with  his parents, William John (born 1869), Sarah Ann (born 1871), Emma Jane (born 1877 were living at Gospel Oak Grove, St Pancras, London. On the 1891 Census the family of parents, William, Sarah, Emma, Herbert, Madeline (born 1883), Charles (born 1885), Catherine (born 1887), Nellie (born 1891) were living at 43, Gospel Oak Grove, St Pancras. Herbert’s father had died in 1889. On the 1901 Census Herbert was still living with his widowed mother at Gospel Oak Grove, together with Madeline, Charles, Catherine and Nellie. 


Herbert married Ada Blanche Morris on 2 Jun 1906 in St Andrew’s Church, Haverstock Hill, Camden, London.


On the 1911 Census Herbert , a carman, was living at 9, Herbert Street, St Pancras, London with his wife Ada and daughter Muriel (born 31 Mar 1907). Ada at some time later came to live at 4, May Cottage, Wheathampstead, Herts. 

Wartime Service

Herbert enlisted on 19 Jan 1915 in the Army Service Corps as Private M2/034071 giving his address at 53 Mansfield Road, Kentish Town, and his occupation Motor Lorry driver. He also noted service with 3rd Battalion London Rifle Volunteers ending in 1900 (record not found).


His previous occupation accelerated his transfer to the B.E. F. on 27 Jan 1915 from Avonmouth, Bristol on SS Twickenham, arriving at MT Base Depot, Rouen on 30 Jan 1915. He was posted to different MT units including 402, 562, 406, 565 Companies and was attached to 8 Siege Battery RGA Ammunition Column. Following a period of leave he reported sick and following admission to 18th (USA) General Hospital died from pneumonia on 20 Oct 1918.

Additional Information

His widow, Mrs. A. Landeryou, 813 Main Street, Worcester, Mass., ordered his headstone inscription: "GUARDING HIM SAFE FROM DANGER GOD GIVETH MY LOVED ONE SLEEP".


War Gratuity of £18 and arrears of £512s 0d was paid to his widow Ada.
