Pre War

Arthur Charles Lancaster was born in 1888 in Hatfield, Herts, the son of George and Mary Annie Lancaster and one of seven children. 


On the 1891 Census the family were living at Wood Hall Lodge, Mill Green,  Hatfield, where his father was a Gardener (Domestic). They remained there in 1901 and 1911 but Arthur had enlisted in Chester on 15 April 1907 and joined the Cheshire Regiment, giving his occupation as Groom. 


In the 1911 Census he was listed as a Private with 2nd Battalion, Cheshire Regiment serving in India.


Officially recorded as born in Hatfield and was living there when he enlisted in London.

Wartime Service

Arthur was sent to France in November 1914 with the 10th Battalion, Cheshire Regiment. 


He was hospitalised with frostbite in February 1915, and had malaria in September the same year. He received a gun shot wound to the forehead on 5 September 1916 and was sent back to England to recover. He also suffered from scabies several times in April/May 1917.


The Bishop’s Hatfield Parish Magazine of October 1917, recorded: “Arthur C Lancaster Cheshire Regiment ... And for the family of Arthur C Lancaster, both of whom have laid down their lives during the past month.”


Awarded the 1914-15 Star (from Service record), British War Medal & Victory Medal.

Additional Information

His mother received a war gratuity of £17 10s and pay owing of £20 2s 3d. Name spelt incorrectly on memorial.


His mother received a war gratuity of £17 10s and pay owing of £20 2s 3d. While living in Woodhall Lodge, Hatfield, Herts., ordered his headstone inscription: “IN LOVING MEMORY”.

Hatfield Parish Council Souvenir Committee Ledger: Mrs Lancaster (Mother) of Mill Green, Hatfield received an “In Memoriam and Roll of Honour Album”.
