Son of Alfred Edward and the late Elizabeth Charlotte Ann (nee BIRD) DAWES; husband of Florence May (nee HESTER) DAWES.

His parents married 2 April 1877 at St Andrew by the Wardrobe, London E.C.  Elizabeth died 1897 in the Chipping Norton, Oxon, district aged 43.  Alfred remarried 1898 in the Watford district to Sarah ELLIOTT; he died 1922 in Watford aged 69, and was buried 10 November in Vicarage Road Cemetery, Watford; Sarah died 1942 in Watford aged 77, and was buried 28 September, also in Vicarage Road Cemetery.

Alfred was born 24 March 1888 in Chipping Norton, and baptised 20 October 1890 at St Mary’s, Chipping Norton.  He attended Beechen Grove Board School, Watford, from 28 September 1898 to 3 May 1901, and married 21 August 1915 at St James’, Watford; they had one child.  Florence remarried 1924 in the Watford district to Harry WOODS; she died 24 August 1973 in Watford aged 90, and was buried 6 September in Vicarage Road Cemetery.

On the 1891 Census, aged 3 he lived in Chipping Norton, with his parents and six siblings.  On the 1901 Census, aged 13 he lived in Watford, with his father, step-mother and four siblings.  On the 1911 Census, a printer’s platon minder aged 23, he still lived in Watford, with his father, step-mother and four siblings.

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Watford; was entitled to the Victory and British War medals, and died of wounds received in action.

Additional Information

His brother Morris died 26 April 1918 and also features on Watford Borough Roll of Honour.

Unfortunately, Alfred’s Service Record appears to be one that did not survive the World War Two bombing.
