Horace Frank Lake was born 27 December 1891 in Wigginton, Herts, son of George Robert Lake a Carpenter (B 1867 in Wigginton) and Elizabeth Lake (nee Collier) (B 1965 in Wigginton). He was one of eight children. Between 1899 and 1901 the family moved from Wigginton to Watford.
His parents married 1886 in Wigginton, Herts. George died 1936 in the Edmonton, Middx, district aged 69; Elizabeth died 1946 in the St Alban’s, Herts, district aged 81.
1901 Census records Horace aged 8, living with his parents, sisters Georgina 14, Bertha 7, Emily 3, Mary 2 and brothers, James 12 and Bertie 10, at 107 Leavesden Road, Watford, Herts.
By 1911 Horace was working as a milk carrier, living at home with his parents, sisters Emily, Florence Mary, and brother Leonard 8, at 107 Leavesden Road, Watford, Herts.
Officially recorded as born in Wigginton and was living in Watford when he enlisted in Bedford.
Wartime Service
Horace enlisted in Bedford, Beds and was posted to the Bedfordshire Regiment with the Service Number 26560.
Horace was Killed in Action on 24th November 1916, he is buried in the Berles-au-Bois Churchyard Extension, France. Grave Ref L. 4.
Additional Information
The value of his effect were £2-10s-2d, which went to his mother Elizabeth Lake and £3, War Gratuity which went to his father George R Lake.
