Son of Rosetta (nee JOHNSON) KNIGHT of Ingatestone, Essex, and the late William KNIGHT.
His parents married 25 December 1880 at St Christopher’s, Willingale Doe, Essex. William died 1910 in the Chelmsford, Essex, district aged 56; Rosetta died 1940 in the Chelmsford district aged 80.
James was born 1895 in Ingatestone, and resided in Ingatestone.
On the 1901 Census, aged 5 he lived in Ingatestone, with his parents and five siblings. On the 1911 Census, a milkman on a farm aged 15, he still lived in Ingatestone, with his widowed mother and two siblings.
Wartime Service
He enlisted in Holborn, London, and was formerly Private 15889 2nd Battalion Essex Regiment.
He was entitled to the Victory, British War and 1914-15 Star medals, his qualifying date being 1 April 1915, and died at the General Hospital, Glasgow.
Additional Information
Unfortunately, James’ Service Record appears to be one that did not survive the World War Two bombing.
Service number appears as 27430 in some records.
