George enlisted in the Royal Navy on 25th Sep 1907 and first served on the Acheron. He served for 5 years until 1912

In 1913 he married Daisy Florence Sewell in Islington. A daughter, Florence Maud, was baptised at St Jude, Islington on 21 February 1915. At this time they were living at 42 Stanley Road, Islington and his occupation was Stoker R.N. His wife, Daisy was later living at 36 Church Street, Rickmansworth where George apparently  worked as a chair maker. Wartime Service

George re-enlisted on 2 August 1914.

He was initially on the Pembroke II and in October that year transferred to the Black Prince, an armoured cruiser which was sunk at the Battle of Jutland with the loss of all 857 men. His body was not recovered for burial. The Battle of Jutland, the largest naval battle of the war, took place from 31 May to 1 June 1916. Fourteen British and eleven German ships sank with a total of 9823 casualties. The result was indecisive, with both sides claiming victory.
