Pre War

Son of Caroline (nee HORROD or HORWOOD) KNIGHT of Watford and the late George KNIGHT.

His parents married 26 October 1880 at St Mary’s, Islington, London.  George died 1901 in the Edmonton, Middx, district aged 63; Caroline died 1919 in the Hackney, London, district aged 70.

Charles was born 1886 in Highbury, London, and resided in Tottenham.

On the 1891 Census, aged 5 he lived in Islington, with his parents and six siblings.  On the 1901 Census, an office boy aged 15, he lived in West Green, Middx, with his widowed mother and seven siblings.  On the 1911 Census, a postman aged 25, he still lived in West Green, with his widowed mother and three siblings.

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Tottenham, London; was entitled to the Victory, British War and 1914-15 Star medals, his qualifying date being 1 September 1915, and died of wounds received in action.

Additional Information

Unfortunately, Charles’ Service Record appears to be one that did not survive the World War Two bombing. His brother Sydney died 5 October 1916 and also features on Watford Borough Roll of Honour.

*1 Believed more correctly, (County of London) Bn. London Regiment (The Rangers).
