Alfred Knight was born on 3 February 1886 in Kilburn, Middlesex, the son of Alfred and Rhoda Knight and one of four children. He was baptised on 28 March 1886 at Holy Trinity Church, Kilburn and was admitted to St Augustine’s School, Kilburn, Westminster on 19 March 1894 with his home address given as 2 Kilburn Mews. He left on 26 August 1895, which may have been when the family moved to Codicote.
On 1901 and 1911 Censuses the family were living in High Street, Codicote with Alfred working as a Garden Labourer and Gardener (Domestic).
Wartime Service
Alfred enlisted at Marylebone, Middlesex and served with the 8th Battalion, East Surrey Regiment in France from 27 July 1915.
He was initially presumed dead and later confirmed as having been killed in action on 3 May 1917. He has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, France.
Additional Information
His mother Rhoda (Lawrence) was born in Codicote. She received a war gratuity of £11 together with two payments of pay owing of £15 10s 10d and £3 17s 9d. Pension cards exist but give no indication of the amount paid.
