Pre War

George Kitchener was born on 21 Jun 1897 in Richmond, Surrey to George Kitchener. A coachman, and Ellen (nee  Curtis) The family were living at White Lodges Stables, Richmond Park.

George’s Father married Ellen Curtis on 4 Feb 1896 at St Mary’s , Chatham. Ellen had been married to William T Armstrong on 26 Mar 1890 in Paddington, London.

On the 1901 Census the family of parents, Annie (born 1880), Louisa (born 1884), Frederick (born 1891), Grace (born 1895),  Emily (born 1896), George and Constance (born 1901 were living at Valley Lane, Flamstead. George’s father. George  Kitchener died  in 1906.

On the 1911 Census the family of mother, Annie, Grace, George, Constance and, Mabel (born 1905) were living at Valley Lane, also recorded was a lodger  Leonard Blake a coachman.

Wartime Service

No Service Record was found for George who enlisted as Private 17911 in the Bedfordshire Regiment probably soon after the Outbreak of the Great War.


Following his training he was posted to 6th (Service) Battalion of the Regiment and may have gone to France with his Battalion on 30 Jul 1915 as part of  112th Brigade, 37th Division. situated near Ypres. At some time he was promoted to Lance Corporal. George was reported to have been killed by enemy shellfire while in the trenches on 10 Nov 1915.

War Gratuity of £3 10s and arrears paid of £3 11s 9d (£3 2s 10d to his mother Ellen and 8s 11d to his half sister Louisa).
