George Kingston was born in Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire in 1881, the son of George and Eliza Kingston, and was baptised in Berkhamsted on 28 August 1881.  He was one of eight children.


On the 1891 Census the family were living at Canal Side, Berkhamsted. They remained there in 1901 when they resided at 6 Canal Side and George and his father were working as a general labourers. 


They had moved to 65 Shrublands Avenue, Berkhamsted by 1911. His father was employed as a labourer in a market garden and George was a general labourer.

Wartime Service

George enlisted in Bedford and joined the 8th Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment. 


He was killed in action on 15 September 1916, aged 42, during the Battle of Flers-Courcelette during which the Battalion suffered severe casualties, some of which were caused by their own artillery barrage falling short where three companies were drawn up for the attack in shell holes.


He has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, France. 

Additional Information

His father received a war gratuity of £3 and pay owing of £2 4s 2d. His mother received a pension of 11 shillings a week in respect of George and his brother Bertie who also died. 


Both brothers are named on the Thiepval Memorial and Berkhamsted Memorial.
