Pre War

Walter Noble King was born in Hemel Hempstead in 1887, the son of Sarah Ann Prior.


On the 1911 Census Walter was living with his uncle George King and his family at Sonning Eye, Reading, Berks and working as a Rod Merchant's Labourer.


He is listed on polling records as living at 55 Brighton Road, Reading with William Harry Prior at the same address.  On pension records his mother's address was given as 55 Brighton Road, Reading, Berks. 

Wartime Service

Walter enlisted in Reading, Berks and joined the 5th Battalion, Princess Charlotte of Wales (Royal Berks) Regiment. After training at Shorncliffe, Folkestone and Malplaquet Barracks at Aldershot,  he served in France from 28 July 1915. 


During his time on the Western Front he would have seen action in the Battle of Loos in September 1915 and Battle of Pozieres in August 1916 as well as the The Battles of the Scarpe and Battle of Arleux in the Arras sector in 1917. 


His death was presumed on 30 November 1917 during the Battle of Cambrai . He has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Cambrai Memorial, France. 

Additional Information

A payment of £21 10s 9d, which included a war gratuity of £16 10s was split between his mother Sarah and nephew Leslie. On pension records his mother is shown as the mother of both Walter Noble King and Charles Edward Prior (Walter's half brother) who served with the Worcestershire Regiment and died 18 February 1917, however no details are given concerning any pension payment awarded.
