Pre War
George William King was born in Willesden, Middlesex in 1885, the son of William Samuel and Mary Ann King and was baptised at St Augustine's, Paddington, London on 30 March 1887. They were then living at 22 Kelson Street, Brondesbury and his father was working as an excavator.
On the 1891 Census they were living at Lowfield Road, Brondesbury, Hampstead, London, where his father gave his occupation as Sewerman. They remained in Lowfield Road in 1901 at which time George, then aged 15, was working as a Telegraph Messenger.
He married Kate Roberts on 17 July 1910 in the Amersham district and by the 1911 Census he was living with wife and baby son George William John (born 17 Sep 1910) at 97 Dalling Road, Hammersmith, Middx and working as a guard on the railway. They later had three more children, Kate (14 Sep 1912), Gertrude (23 Aug 1914) and William Samuel (26 Jan 1917).
On pension records his widow gave her address as 27 Ariel Road, Brondesbury and later lived at Allerton Cottage, Ickleford, Herts.
Wartime Service
George enlisted in Willesden, Middlesex and joined the Middlesex Regiment , originally under Reg No.. 9633, later transferring to the 1st/8th (T.F.) Battalion under reg. no. TF/262997.
He served in France and Flanders and was presumed dead and killed in action on 19 May 1917. He has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Arras memorial.
Additional Information
His widow Kate received a war gratuity of £8 10s and pay owing of £2 0s 4d. She also received a pension of £1 8s 9d a week for herself and her four children.
She remarried in 1928 to William F Primett and they were living in Hitchin on the 1939 Register.
