Albert was born in Canning Town, Plaistow, London in 1894 to William, a stevedore, and Emma Susan (nee Wright).


On the 1901 Census Albert with his parents and older brother William Walter were living at 28, Argyle Street, West Ham. On the Census the Family were living at 18, Brock Road, Plaistow, Albert was listed as a Law Clerk and William Walter as a commercial clerk.


He was member of staff at Leavesden Asylum but we do not know in what capacity.

Wartime Service

Albert enlisted as Private 14821 in the Worcestershire Regiment and was posted 4 Jul 1915 to 2nd Battalion who had been in France since 14 Aug 1914. Albert’s Service Record could not found.


The 2nd Division, of which 2nd Battalion Worcs was a part, were involved in the Battle of Loos in Sep 15 and were transferred to 33rd  Division on 20 Dec 1915 as ‘stiffeners’ (experienced units to bolster inexperienced formations). 33rd Division then took part in the Battles of the Somme (Albert 1 Jul to 13 Jul, Bazentin 14 to 19 Jul, High Wood 20 to 25 Jul 1916). 


Albert was killed in action on 21 Aug 1916 and as his remains were not recovere he is remembered in on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme.

Additional Information

War Gratuity of £8 10s and arrears of £5 2s 7d was paid to his father.
