Pre War

Edgar George V Kent was born in Woodford, Essex, on 28th April 1897, son of George Kent a, Journeyman Nurseryman and Annie Elizabeth Kent (nee Knight). The eldest of two children.


1901 Census records Edgar aged 3, living with his parents, and sister Violet Doris (3 months) at, 9 Hoe Lane, Enfield, Middx.


By 1911 Edgar (13), and the family had moved to 6 Dewhurst Road, Cheshunt, Herts. Both Edgar and Violet (recorded as Doris) are attending school. 

Wartime Service

Edgar enlisted at Enfield, Middx, posted to the 13th (3rd South Down) Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment and issued with the service number SD/5885.


The 13th Battalion landed at Le Havre, France in March 1916, seeing action on the Western Front.


Edgar is recorded as having died on 8th October 1916, of wounds received in action, but the CWGC record him as missing in action and record him on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France, to the missing, Pier and Face 7C.

Additional Information

His mother Annie received a Dependents Pension of 7/- a week from 24th July 1917.


His effects of £3-9-7, pay owing and his war gratuity of £3, went to his father George.
