Biography
Edmund Keen was listed in the Absent Voter Records for Abbots Langley in Autumn 1918, Spring 1919, and Autumn 1919. He was initially identified from the Absent Voter Records and was not recorded elsewhere in the Abbots Langley Parish records. In the Absent Voter Records Edmund was listed serving with the 17th Field Bakery, Army Service Corps (ASC), and his address was given at 36 Marlin Square, Abbots Langley.
Edmund was born on 24th July 1895 at Aldenham. He was one of eight children (four sons and four daughters) born to John and Rachel Keen. In the 1901 and 1911 Census the family lived at Letchmore Heath in Hertfordshire, where John worked as a Master Baker.
It is not known when Edmund enlisted or when or how he came to live at Abbots Langley. His Medal Roll indicated that he only served with the Army Service Corps during his time in the Army. In the Absent Voter Records Edmund was listed serving with the 17th Field Bakery of the ASC, and it is presumed that he had followed his father’s trade (Master Baker) when he was old enough to start work.
The Absent Voter Records indicated that Edmund’s rank was Private, however his Medal Card noted his rank was Acting Corporal, and his Medal Roll showed that at the end of the period of Service he had gained the rank of Corporal.
Edmund Keen survived the War.
