Pre War

Charles Stanton was born in Hinxworth, Herts in 1889, the son of Daniel and Edith Stanton, and baptised on 2 June 1889 at Hinxworth.

On the 1891 Census the family were living in High Street, Hinxworth, were his father was working as an agricultural labourer. They remained in Hinxworth in 1901 at which time Charles was a 12 year old scholar.

His father died in 1902 and on the 1911 Census Charles Stanton was a serving soldier with the 2nd Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment stationed at St George's Bermuda.

His mother later gave her address on the pension card as 70 Sydney Road Hornsey.

Wartime Service

Charles was already a serving soldier at the outbreak of war, having enlisted in Hertford, and served with the 2nd Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment. The Battalion left Dover, arriving in Zeebrugge, Belgium on 6 October 1914. They were soon in action, suffering their first casualties on the Menin Road, near Ypres less than two weeks later.

He would have been in action in 1915 at the Battles of Neuve-Chappelle &  Festubert, action at Givenchy and the Battle of Loos, followed by the Battle of the Somme in 1916 and the Battle of Arras, Battle of Ypres in 1917.

At some point he was promoted to acting Corporal but was killed in action on 22 March 1918 during the Battle of St Quentin. He has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial, France.
