Pre War

Ernest Alfred Joscelyn was born 1899 in Little Hadham to widow Alice Joscelyn. In the same registration quarter she married Arthur Cundall.  On the 1901 Census Ernest has the surname Cundall and the family are living at Rye Street, Bishop's Stortford. By 1911 The family are living at 38 Hadham Road, Bishop's Stortford and Ernest is named as stepson with the surname Joscelyn.

Wartime Service

He enlisted at Bedford and served with the 8th Battalion East Surrey Regiment.


He was killed in action and his body was later recovered, one of 500 which were brought in from the immediate neighbourhood, and reburied in the Bouzincourt Ridge Cemetery at Albert.

Additional Information

His mother received a war gratuity of £5 10s and pay owing of £10 5s 10d. Civil Registration surname was given as 'Joscelyn', but many alternative spellings have been used: e.g. Josclyne, Josclyn, Joscelyne, and a mis-transcription of Jordyne on the Register of Soldier's Effects.
