Joseph William Jordan was born on 4 Jan 1883 (baptised 28 Jan 1883) in Notting Hill to Joseph Jordan, and Elizabeth (nee Honeychurch).
On the 1891 Census the family of parents, Joseph, Elizabeth (born 1885) and Caroline (born 1889) were living at 4, Henry Street, Holborn.
On the 1901 Census the family of parents, Joseph W, Elizabeth, Caroline, Edward, (born 1894), Alice (born1896), Annie (born 1898) and Ellen (born 1901) at 21, York Road, Upper Edmonton.
On the 1911 Census Joseph W was an iron turner and a boarder with the Stokes family of parents, Arthur William & Elizabeth, Gladys Alice (born 1894), Evelyn May (born 1896), Elsie (born 1898), Cordelia (born 1905) and another boarder Albert William Hammond (born 1896, clerk) and living at 6, Moira Cottages, Letchworth, Herts.
His mother later lived at 8, Raynham Avenue, Edmonton, London. Letchworth, Herts.
Wartime Service
No Service Record was found, Joseph enlisted as a Territorial Soldier in the Suffolk Regiment as Private 2665 around Oct 1914 and was transferred to 10th (Service) Battalion, Hampshire Regiment. The 10th Battalion joined 29th Brigade, 10th (Irish) Division in Mar 1915 and sailed from Liverpool on 7 Jul 1915 arriving at Mudros. The Division was landed at Suvla Bay, Gallipoli on 6 Aug 1915 with 29 Brigade landing at Anzac Cove.
The Division fought at Chocolate Hill (7-8 Aug), Sari Bair (6-10 Aug) and later action of Hill 60. They were withdraw on 29 Sep 1915 and landed at Salonika on 5-10 Oct and took part in the action at Kosturino (7-8 Dec) during the retreat from Serbia. In this action Joseph was Missing and his death presumed to have been on 7 Dec 1915, his remains were not recovered and he his remembered on th Doiran Memorial.
Slight wound April/May 1915.
