Born on 28 Mar 1897 in Stone Cross, Lindfield, Sussex son of Lieutenant Colonel William Henry Dawes and Emily Georgina (Gordon) Jones. Educated at Haileybury College 1911-14 and the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst. He was unmarried.

Wartime Service

Gazetted 2nd Lieutenant on 13 Jan 1915, entered France on 29 April and was promoted Lieutenant in Jul 1915. He was severely wounded near Ypres on 25 May 1915, returned to the front on 10 Feb 1916 and was awarded the MC for gallant conduct with the Lewis guns. He was killed in action on the Somme.
