Walter Arthur was born in 1891 in Harpenden to Albert Jennings, a bricklayer, and Ann Matilda (nee Burgoyne).
In 1901 the family were living at Wheathampstead Road, Harpenden.On the 1911 Census the family were at Coles Wood Road, Harpenden and Walter was working as a grocer’s assistant. Walter married Ellen Dora Ogglesby in 1915.
Wartime Service
Walter was enlisted as 288697 in Royal Field Artillery, his final rank being Corporal. He was attached to 1 Battery Reserve Brigade RFA. This was in effect a base depot for the RFA and may have been an attachment during hospital stay.
He died in the General Hospital, Brighton on 1 Dec 1918 and was buried in Harpenden Cemetery.
Additional Information
War gratuity of £7 and arrears£1 8s 0d paid to his widow.
Walter has a personal headstone (not CWGC) his inscription reads:
"IN LOVING REMEMBRANCE OF OUR DEAR SON WALTER ARTHUR JENNINGS CORPL. R.F.A. DIED AT STAMFORD RD. HOSPITAL BRIGHTON DEC . 1918 AGED 27 YEARS
WE LOVE THEE WELL BUT JESUS LOVES THEE BEST"
