Walter William Jenkins was born in 1887 in to Richard Jenkins, coal porter, and Mary Ann (nee Lincoln).
On the 1891 Census the family of parents, Levi (born 1874, a cowman). John (born 1877), Ada (born 1884), Martha (born 1885) and Walter were living at cottages, 3 Coopers Lane, Northaw, Hatfield.
On the 1901 Census the family of parents, Martha, and Walter, a farm labourer, were living at Southgate Road, South Mimms, Potters Bar.
On the 1911 Census still living at Southgate Road with his parents, Walter was listed a gardener domestic, his father was now a coal merchant.
Walter married Alice Price in 1911 there would be children Lilian Mary (born 2 May 1912, Douglas (born 20 May 1914 and John Haigh (born 20 Jan 1917).
Wartime Service
Walter was enlisted in Northumberland Fusiliers as Private 44441. No Service record was found for him.
Following his training, which was probably with the 3rd (Reserve) Battalion at Sunderland, he was posted to 10th (Service) Battalion of the Regiment, which had been in France since Aug 1915 As part of 23 Division the Battalion had taken part in Many of the Battles of the Somme. It may be that Walter took part in some of the later actions. In 1917 the division was switched to the Ypres area and took part in the Battle of Messine, before becoming engaged in the Battles of 3rd Ypres (Passchendaele).The Battle of Menin Road took place between 20 – 25 Sep 1917. During the initial attack Walter was reported as missing and his death presumed to have been on 20 Sep 1917.
Additional Information
War Gratuity of £4 10s and arrears of £3 12s 5d was paid to his widow, she also received a pension of 26s 3d.
