Stanley Stanton Jeffrey was born on 10 Sep 1883 in Hockerill, Bishop's Stortford to Alfred Jeffery and Harriet (nee Stubbins) and baptised on 26 Oct 1883 in Hockerill, Herts.
On the 1881 Census the family consisted of parents, Benjamin (born 1863), Henry E (born 1868, Arthur W (born 1869), Albert (born 1872), Alfred J (born 1875), Emily Eliza (born 1878) and Elizabeth M (born 1879).
On the 1891 Census the family of parents, (Emily) Eliza, Thomas (born 1882) and were living at Dane Street, Bishop's Stortford, where his father was working as a bricklayer. His father died in 1895.
On the 1901 Census Stanley, the youngest child and a solicitors Clerk, was living in Hockerill Street, Hockerill, Bishops Stortford with his widowed mother.
On the 1911 Census, Stanley continued to live with his mother but they had moved to 3 Crown Terrace, Hockerill, Bishop's Stortford and he is described as working as a law clerk. His mother died in 1913.
Wartime Service
Stanley enlisted in Westminster in Nov 1915 (serial number 4651 issued 1 Nov 1915, 5066 issued 4 Dec 1915) as Rifleman 4841 in 16th (County of London) Battalion the London Regiment, (Queen's Westminster Rifles).
During his training and service of less than six months and he became ill and died 19 Mar 1916 in Hately Down Military Hospital, Winchester, Hampshire. He enlisted in Westminster and served in the 16th Battalion of the London Regiment, (Queen's Westminster Rifles.
Additional Information
A war gratuity was inadmissible because he served for less than six months but his sister Emily received pay owing of £2 18s 2d.
Stanley was buried in the family grave in Hockerill (All Saints)
Churchyard (not CWGC). His part of the inscription reads:
STANLEY STANTON JEFFERY
BELOVED YOUNGEST SON OF THE ABOVE (Alfred & Harriet Jeffery) OF THE 3RD QUEENS WESTMINSTER RIFLES.
WHO DIED MARCH 19TH 1916.
THE MILITARY HOSPITAL, HATELY DOWN. WINCHESTER.
