Pre War

Arthur Bracey Jefferies was born in 1895 in Codicote, the only son of Henry and Ellen Jefferies, and baptised on 30 June 1895 at St Giles, Codicote. He had a younger sister May.

On the 1901 Census the family were living in High Street, Codicote (next door to The Globe Public House). His father was working as a Carpenter. They remained in High Street, Codicote in 1911 at which time Arthur was a Carpenter's Apprentice working with his father.

His parents later lived at Myrtle Cottage, Codicote.

Wartime Service

Arthur enlisted in Codicote and initially joined the Hertfordshire Yeomanry under Reg. No. 1377, later transferring to the 1st Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment.

He was killed in action on 18 April 1915 during the Battle of Hill 60. He has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial.

Additional Information

His father received a war gratuity of £3 and pay owing of £4 12s 3d. N.B. A pension card lists Arthur as Percy (possible misreading of Bracey) Jefferies with the same service number, however there is no indication of any pension amount being paid.
