Pre War

On the 1891 Census Ernest was living at Beech Hill Cottages, Camlot Way, Enfield with his mother, a widow, elder brother Samuel (born 1887, died 1893) and Annie Webb, a cousin.


On the 1901 Census Ernest was living at Quakers Lane, South Mimms, Potters Bar with his mother and Elizabeth Webb, an aunt.


The 1911 Census records him as a Gunner enlisted in 8th Battery Royal Field Artillery in India. He is recorded in other records as having enlisted in East Stratford, London.

Wartime Service

No Service record was found for Ernest. His return from India was not found but It is known that he served in ‘C’ Battery 160 Brigade RFA, Gunner 44988. This unit was part of the Artillery component of 34 Division.


The division arrived in France in Jan 1916 and took part in the Somme Offensive in 1916 and the Arras Offensive in the spring of 1917. It was during the Arras series of Battle that Ernest was killed in action on 1 May 1917.

Additional Information

War Gratuity of £15 10s and arrears of £9 19s 10d was shared between two aunts, Elizabeth Webb and Jane Dunham.
