Thomas James was born in Dunton, Biggleswade in 1877 to Jubal (Jobb) Jarman, a farm labourer, and Edith (nee Cole).
On the 1881 Census the family of parents, 4 brothers (Frederick A (13), Joseph (7), Thomas (4), Charles (1)) and 1 sister (Eliza J (10)), were living at a cottage on the High Street, Dunton, Also present was Thomas Cole - Edith's father. Jubal was working as a farm labourer. By the 1891 Census Thomas, aged 14 was working as an agricultural labourer and now had another brother (Amos (8)) and two more sisters (Rose Ada (6), Sarah Louisa (3)). On the 1901 Thomas, now working as a gardener, was living at 5 York Terrace, Mays lane, Chipping Barnet, Herts.
Thomas married Margaret Jane Wills in 1908. On the 1911 Census they were living at 62, the Drive, Barnet, Herts.
Wartime Service
Thomas was enlisted in the Royal Flying Corps as 54557, Air Mechanic III and posted to Recruit Training Centre Blandford, Dorset. He died from illness on 2 Feb 1917.
Additional Information
His mother, Mrs E Jarman, 25A, Mount View, West End Lane, High Barnet, ordered his headstone inscription: "UNTIL THE DAY BREAK AND THE SHADOWS FLEE AWAY SOL. II. 17".
Recorded as inadmissible for War Gratuity, arrears of £2 5s 9d paid to his widow.
